Standard of Care Biopsy Guidelines for Suspected Bone Tumors

Biopsy Guidelines in Orthopaedic Oncology

The initial biopsy of a bone tumor is the most crucial diagnostic step, yet it is also where many errors occur. An incorrectly placed biopsy can contaminate adjacent muscular compartments, vessels, and nerves.

Crucial Biopsy Principles:

  1. Biopsy Track Resection: The biopsy tract must be placed so that it can be completely excised along with the tumor during final resection.
  2. Placement: Always perform the biopsy along the planned surgical incision line.
  3. Expertise: The biopsy should be planned or performed by the same orthopaedic oncologist who will perform the main tumor removal.

An unplanned biopsy performed by an inexperienced surgeon can turn a simple limb-salvage case into a mandatory amputation.
